The Moldenhauer Archives are a leading collection of manuscripts and other sources for the study of music, gathered over four decades and spanning the history of Western music from Gregorian chant through the end of the 20th century. Illustrated with 88 color plates and 15 duotones, as well as 243 signatures, this substantial volume contains 57 essays by a variety of experts on items in the archives, and include music (ranging from a musical sketch by Beethoven for the Puzzle Canon "Das Schweigen" to Aurelio de la Vega's painting-like score for "The Magic Labyrinth"); letters (George Frideric Handel writes in 1749 on his preferences for a pipe organ); literary works (Frank Wedekind's handwritten prologue to his play Erdgeist); and other ephemera (receipts signed by J.S. Bach).
