(Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) This elegiac collection by United States Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey brings together two legacies of the Deep South. The title refers to the Mississippi Native Guards, a black regiment whose role in the Civil War—guarding Confederate captives on Ship Island—has been largely overlooked. Here too are poems that pay tribute to her mother, whose marriage to a white man was illegal in her native Mississippi in the 1960s, and who died when the poet was a teenager. Trethewey reclaims her memory, just as she reclaims the voices of the black soldiers whose service has been all but forgotten. This edition includes an audio CD of poems read by the author.
