Closer to an elegy than a shoot-em-up, this 1962 film was one of legendary filmmaker John Ford's last, and Paramount pulled out all the stops, casting John Wayne and James Stewart as a rugged rancher and big-city lawyer, respectively, who clash over a woman (Vera Miles) but ultimately come together to rid the frontier town of Shinbone of notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Designer Edith Head received her 22nd Oscar nomination for the movie's Western duds. The juggernaut of a supporting cast includes Edmond O'Brien, Andy Devine, Lee Van Cleef, John Carradine, Jeanette Nolan, Denver Pyle, and Strother Martin.
