Norwegian jazz journalist Randi Hultin began opening her home to visiting musicians in 1953. Her Gartnerveien address soon became an institution known among jazz personalities all over the world, including Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Bud Powell, Eubie Blake, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and Chet Baker, to name a few. She also drew many of their portraits, and recorded interviews and impromptu jam sessions on her Tandberg tape recorder. This warm series of memories and profiles by Hultin includes an audio CD with some of her personal recordings, including songs dedicated to her. "From Louis Armstrong to Zoot Sims, every jazz musician who has traveled to Scandinavia has become a friend of journalist Randi Hultin. One seldom has the opportunity to hear these jazz stars in such informal circumstances, and it is a joy to vicariously join the party at Randi's."—Dave Brubeck
